Validity and normal value of capillary blood glucose

Abstract
Determination of blood glucose is the basis of evaluating diabetes mellitus and other diseases associated with hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia. And it is undoubtedly one of the most frequently performed procedures in the clinical laboratory.
Recently, many methods for determination of blood glucose have been developed, and the validity of micromethod has been emphasized. As microchemical methods have been deve¡þloped to a clinical use, microsampling from finger puncture has becomel a favored method especially in infants or obese patients.
Blood glucose was measured by o-toluidine method and enzymatic (glucose oxidase) me¡þthod with simultaneously obtained venous and capillary bloods. The subjects were healthy Korean adults in fasting state.
The results were as follows
1. The mean values were 93.1 mg/dl by o-toluidine method and 94.7mg/dl by enzymatic method, in venous blood, respectively. Correlation of coefficient was r=0.974 and linear regression was y=-2.21¡¾1.0065 x.
2. The mean values with venous blood and capillary blood both in enzymatic methods were 94.8 mg/dl and 117.7mg/dl, respectively. Capillary blood glucose gave 13mg/dl higher than venous blood glucose.
3. The normal ranges of glucose level in fasting state of adult were
71.3-114.9 mg/dl by o-toluidine method, venous blood, 71.2-117.4 mg/dl by enzymatic method, capillary blood, and 81.5-133.9 mg/dl by enzymatic method, capillary blood, respectively.
